Pea's a Poppin'

Finally! The peas are starting to germinate like crazy. All varieties are sprouting with what looks like excellent germination rates. I was a bit leery as most of the seed planted was home saved from last year. It seems that peas seeds are easy to save as bean seeds.

.

This spring, for the first time I'm having problems with birds nipping the seedlings. The culprits are the Junco's. These have always been winter birds departing early in the spring. I'm just hoping that they have their flight out booked very soon. I just hope that they have not decided to stay for the summer.

  1. I've had problems with birds eating my pea plants for the past couple of years. I had to resort to bird netting last year....have you ever tried to untangle pea vines from that stuff? It was the sparrows that were eating mine, and I had them living in birdhouses in the garden! This year I glued jar lids over the openings, so they can't nest here any more. Sorry, but they were just too destructive to the garden. Carrot, beet and lettuce seedlings suffered, too.

  2. Annie's Granny,
I hope I won't have to resort to netting. The offending birds should be headed north very soon. I do have some netting though, the burning bushes need to be covered in late summer to prevent birds from completely defoliating them. It would be easier than trying to chase them away.
