I'm Back...

I can't believe that I haven't posted since late September.  I was already starting to go through garden 'burnout', but the snow storm on October 29 put me over the edge.

We had the highest snowfall total in this area over 10 inches.  All of my supports snapped due to the weight of snow and green foliage.  My pole bean seed harvest was practically zero thanks to this.  The worst was the damage to the shrubs.  My matched set of burning bushes is down to one.

This picture is from last year.  The torches on other side are 5 ft tall, so you can see the scale.  The branches cracked at ground level or below, when they were cut out there was nothing left.  I'm leaving the stump to see if it will regrow, but it took 14 years to get it to this size!  While this was the worst of the damage, there was a lot less serious in other parts of the yard.

Well, that was then, now I am enjoying the fact that I have an unobstructed view from the kitchen window.  I do miss seeing the winter birds who were always in and out of the bush...

Happy Holidays to all!

  1. Welcome back to blogland and a Happy New Year to you! You certainly had a lot of snow there and of course the damage to the garden is unavoidable, thank God we here in Ireland had no snow this year and I do not think anyone missed it after last year!Everyone was able to get out and about for Christmas and today is bright with a little light rain but we can live with that!

  2. I'm so sorry you lost that lovely burning bush! I guess we've been lucky, as we've had no snow. Of course, we've also had no rain, and everything is looking terribly dry. My front yard and flower gardens look just like a big mess of dead matter, as though the place is abandoned and uncared for. I'm wishing for spring, warm weather and a few days of heavy yard work!

  3. Sorry to hear about your storm damage, I know what you mean about garden burnout. I was getting that way too in late Sept but now my garden burnout has been replaced with a new disease, garden fever.

  4. Tales from the Garden, I'm glad you had such good weather for Christmas! The weather was great here too.

Grannie, I hope you get your wish for some warm weather. I'm hoping for a stretch of very cold weather... Death to the Stink Bugs!

Chris, Glad that your burnout has passed, no fever yet for me, but I know that it's coming.
