Seeds are Sprouting

The first of the seeds planted in the potager have sprouted.

First to sprout was the arugula, on Tuesday.  A record for spring taking only 3 days.

Clumps of arugula.
Today the first of the peas and radishes popped up.

The first of the peas sprouts.

Radish sprouts.

It took the radish and chitted peas only 5 days to sprout.  The warm temps and the 4 drizzly days must be the key.

On Saturday the temps are supposed to cool down into the 60's for a while, much better temps for the new sprouts.

  1. I didn't chit anything, but I noticed my radishes were up today. That meant it was time for a second planting. I always have good intentions of doing succession planting, but I don't always keep up with it. This year I will. Yes, I will. Maybe.

    1. Granny, I wasn't expecting much from the radishes as the seed was rather old. I hope to plant more this weekend, but they are predicting rain. I WILL get in another sowing of arugula...

  2. This is the first year that I have planted peas and I had heard they could be a bit of a pain, but so far so good. Isn't it great to see all these seeds pop through?

    1. I don't find peas a pain, in cool weather they seem to take forever to sprout. That's why I soaed them and then kept them in a damp coffee filter for a few days. I do love to see the rows and clumps of seedlings as they first emerge.

  3. Ugh! I am looking forward to 60s this weekend. 80s is too much, too soon. I am itching to start planted in the garden early, but I have been fooled too many times before. Much safer under lights in the basement.

    1. GrafixMuse, I'm not fooled by the weather. I know that the as soon as I plant something out of season, I'll get zapped by mother nature. I have lots volunteer tomatoes germinating. I may save one of these just to see what happens.

  4. I love it when they just start sprouting. I'll check on mine tomorrow and see if I can get some good shots and over the weekend I'll start my second wave of seeds.

    1. Jenny, I love when they sprout too. Especially outdoors as there are many things that can go wrong. Looking forward to seeing your pics.

  5. I just got a little distracted playing in Ed's fish tank! Did you just put that up and where did you find it??

It's so exciting when the first seeds start to sprout! I knew they would be up any day! Boy, I can't wait for some fresh peas.

    1. Robin, It actually is from Blogger. One day I was bored and going through all of the Gadgets they list, and found it under More Gadgets. Search for fish and it's the first gadget listed.

I'm anticipating the first peas too, and lettuce, and spinach...

  6. The peas will be early this year as they came up so quickly. I cheated though, I risked some seed to plant early. This year it paid off. It was just seed anyway. I did push some of the transplant schedules up a bit - just a week for some and none for others. I'll be ready to protect them though. The warm weather has me too rearing to go.

Oh and I didn't notice the fish tank until Robin commented. lol

    1. Daphne, if it wasn't for one of your earlier posts I never would have thought about chitting my peas. My schedule is pushed up, but not by that much. I'm afraid of Mother Nature dropping the "other shoe".

I love the fish tank, but it does get lost at the bottom of the blog.

  7. Your seedlings are doing very well Ed. Some sprouted really fast. I never had much luck with radishes here in my old clay soil.I should try some in a window box container sometime with potting soil and see how they do. You are getting a good start on your early plants. Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Lona, none of us here are that fond of radishes, but I had the seed..., LOL. I'm actually very curious about the one with the golden skin. My early things are doing great so far, I'm hoping my luck holds out.
