How My Garden Grows- Part 2

The Pool Bed.

The pool bed this year is evolving.  This year it will be edible ornamentals accented with flowers.  Right now it doesn't look like much.  There are some hold overs from last year, 'Powwow Wildberry" echinacea, 'Dolce White to Pink' dianthus and volunteer 'Jubilee Gem' bachelor buttons and 'Carpet of Snow' alyssum.
The ornamental additions are 'Primero' red cabbage and 'Bright Lights' and 'Lipstick' Swiss chard.

Not much to look at yet.

'Primero' red cabbage.

Clump of 'Bright Lights' Swiss chard.

Next weekend I will be adding 'Ruby' lettuce and escarole.

  1. LOL, you're adding more veggies to your flowers and I'm adding more flowers to my veggies! I planted Grandpa today. Grandpa Ott, that is. Our forecast looks pretty good for the next ten days, so I rushed the season just a bit, but I also planted a dozen or so seeds indoors, just in case. If they all grow, I'll be hidden somewhere in the morning glory vines come summer!

I also completely forgot about the Honey Bear squash you sent, so I got those planted inside today. Wondered where I'll put them in the garden, then decided to recycle one of the old whiskey barrels, rolled it over to the soon-to-be-new flower bed next to the lilac tree, and I'll put three Honey Bear in it and accent it with some colorful flowers in the background (probably zinnias....I have so many!).

  2. Granny, my 'Grandpa Ott' have been sprouting for weeks and keep getting singed by frost. They should start to take off now that there is no more frost in the forecast. One of the reasons I am planning on less flowera is that I have now have a few dozen sweet peas seedlings that I need to find space for.

There is nothing wrong with lots of zinnias! I always have too many, but manage to find a spot for them. I won't start mine till May 1.

I finally got one 'Mini Gold' tomato seed to sprout!

    1. That's what you get for sending me most of your viable Mini Golds, every one of mine sprouted! One of them now has at least 15 tomatoes on it. I never got a single New Big Dwarf though, and I tried every seed. The Victors are among my largest seedlings....I should say plants, they are far beyond being seedlings. I'm anxious to get them all out, but won't rush it. Probably another 3 weeks unless weather seems stable and night temps are up by May 1.

    2. Granny, so far I have one 'New Big Dwarf' seedling, but that is enough to save sseds from. I started five 'Coastal Pride Orange' seeds and everyone sprouted. My 'Victor's are growing fast too.

I have about three weeks before mine can go outside, but they can grow a lot in that time.

  3. I like the idea of an ornamental edible bed. Not that I have one. Some of my edibles are ornamental like my fruit trees. But I didn't pick varieties for their beauty, just for their fruit.

    1. I'm getting quite psyched about this bed, I'm hoping it turns out as good as it does in my mind. I'd love a few fruit trees, but don't have the room right now. On the other hand, maybe I can squeeze in a fig tree.

  4. Nice! I planted Bright Lights last year and loved it - nice and crisp and no bitterness at all so of course it's on the "menu" once again this year.

    1. Jenny, that's good to know about 'Bright Lights'. I'm hoping to use a few leaves in salads as well as cooking.
