The first harvests of the year.

Finally I was able to start eating real salads. Being of Sicilian descent, I grew up eating sharp and bitter salads. Long before it was trendy My grandmother and mother were growing arugula, endive, dandelion chicory and escarole to use in salads. In fact lettuce was the green that was used the most sparingly.

Today was another rainy day. The soil was just to wet for any outdoor planting. The day was spent cleaning the light stands and starting the last of the flower seeds. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can get some planting done by the weekend.
The weather doesn't look so good for us on the east coast. Hopefully they will be wrong. I bet you are really enjoying your first harvesting of the year. My husband is Italian. I harvested some beautiful Italian lettuce this week. It's called Quattro Stagioni Sel. Rossina Di Pescia. His parents brought the seeds back from Italy last spring.
ReplyDeleteI'm not Italian but I love those bitter greens. We grow endive, escarole and radicchio in addition to lots of lettuce, including that Canary Tongue.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a real bitter leaf fan. And I hate arugula. I tried growing it one year, never having tasted it. And I immediately pulled it out. lol Everyone has their own loves I guess.
