Harvest Monday- July 30, 2012

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  Stop by and see what other's have harvested this passed week.

The beans are really starting to produce.  right now it's mostly bush beans, but the pole beans should be taking over very soon.

Mixed beans both bush and pole, slightly over a pound.

From the left, 'Cherokee Wax', 'Velour', 'Fortrex', 'Cornetto Largo Verde' and 'Greencrop'.
Tomatoes are trickling in and the shallots are being pulled a few at a time.

"Silvery For Tree' and 'Victor' tomatoes, 'Ambition' shallots.

The cherry tomatoes are starting to turn colors.  I noticed this on 'Italian Dwarf Cherry' and 'Amy's Apricot'.  The 'Black Cherry' tomatoes are taking their sweet time ripening.

This week I'm hoping to start harvesting my summer lettuce.
'Redina', 'Nevada' and 'Cardinale' lettuce from Renee's Garden Seed 'Summer Bouquet Mixed' lettuce.

  1. Yeh... an earlybird like me! As I was reading your harvest, it seemed you were close to me as I'm harvesting about the same things. Yes, Western Maryland is not that far from central PA. Nice harvest.

  2. Beautiful beans. I didn't pick a lot of beans this week which is good since I can catch up with what I've already harvested.

  3. Very nice harvest. Our bush beans are just beginning to produce as well. The tomatoes seem to be taking their sweet time to ripen though.

    1. Thanks Bee Girl, I have to thin the pots to one plant per clump, so I should get lettuce to go with my first cherry tomatoes.

  5. Beans are starting up here too. Not quite as far along as yours but soon! Your lettuces look healthy, sweet, and tender. I need to start planting more lettuces soon.

  6. Wow, your lettuces look so nice! My summer lettuces look about a fourth that size. We are really missing salads. Beans are the big one here too. They are always so dependable.

    1. Nutmeg, the lettuce is growing very quickly. I think it really likes the spot it's in with some afternoon shade.

  8. Are those Romano beans you're growing? They're my favorite for freezing!

    1. They are a Romana variety. The seed came from a mixture that Park Seed used to sell. I have never seen the individual variety for sale in the USA.

  11. Nice harvest - what are the purple ones?

    1. Thanks David. The purple beans are a bush filet bean called 'Velour'. The seed was from Johhny's Selected Seeds.

    1. It must be hard trying to adapt. There was a big difference between gardening in NJ and MD. A difference of only 200+ miles.

  15. I love the multi-coloured beans, I must try a few different varieties this spring. And that little pot of lettuce looks very sweet.

    1. Thanks, I love the way the three colors of beans look. It's a shame that the purple turn green when cooked.

  16. Hi from Baltimore County! Your cooler temps make a difference in what you are harvesting compared to what I'm getting. Do you have critter issues? Bears?

    1. Marcia, I have no large critter issues. Rabbits, etc are kept out by 6 ft fenve surrounding the backyard. Bugs I have- the beans have a few holes in the leaves from the occasional slug. That's about it, no other problems.

  17. you have got good harvest. but how to grow purple beans? Beans is one of my favorite food, which have harvest each year in my garden. We need garden maintenance tips to grow healthy plants.

  18. Nice mixture. My pole beans are killed this months from the rains, only long beans have survived. Time to replant, yet again. LOL.
