A Face Only a Mother Could Love

Daylily seedlings are like children,  Each one unique and different in it's own way.
Some have a face that only a mother could love.
This is a seedling that I've been growing for over 10 years and is now a huge clump.  It has just started to flower and the color is unusual to say the least!

Five blooms open at once.
Yes, that is the true color.  It opens lavender and quickly fades to tan with a lavender edge.  Hmnn... I'm still waiting for the ugly duckling to turn into a swan...

  1. I think your baby is beautiful Ed. I have never tried to grown them from seed before. You have a lot of patience. LOL!

    1. Lona, patience is NOT one of my strong suits. I had stoped my pollen dabbing a few years ago, no room for the seedlings. I am thinking of starting again next year on a very limited scale.

Daylilies are very easy to grow from seed and very easy to hybridize.

  2. What a beautiful daylily! I hope to some day hybridize some of my own daylilies. Is this one you hybridized or did you collect seeds?? Very pretty! Happy Gardening! Mindy

    1. I am glad you like it Ebullient! Daylilies are very easy to cross and they are easy to grow from seed. I can give you all sorts of tips if you are interested.

This one was hybridized back in 2001. It is a diploid out of 'Smokey Mountain Autumn'. I grow mostly tetraploids now so have never used it further hybridizing.
