Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions, it's a great way to show off your harvest.
The spring lettuce is winding down. The rest of it was picked this week as it was starting to bolt. The exception is 'Gentilina'. My three remaining plants have shown no sign of bolting depite heat in the high 90's and over 100 degrees. It has become my second favorite lettuce after 'Ruby'.
The last of the spring 'Wild Garden Mixed' lettuce. Still sweet despite the heat, not shown is the other three plants that were harvested. |
'Gentilina' still compact, crisp and sweet. |
I also have been harvesting a lot of escarole. I did not take a photo of each harvest as they look exactly the same. I also have been stealing more baby shallots to cook with the escarole.
The shallots are starting to bulb. Some have even split into two bulbs. |
The rest of the beets were also harvested. They were all red beets, not as sweet as the white, but still good roasted.
'Detroit Dark Red' beets. |
The pea vines were pulled this week as the last of the pea seed was harvested. I did get a very good crop of pea seed saved for next year. Six ounces of the purple podded 'Pretty', two ounces of the super sweet 'Garden Sweet', two ounces of 'Freezonian' and two ounces of a single plant selection of 'Freezonian' thet consistantly set double pods. I'm hoping that all of this selection will set double pods.
The Gentilina is so pretty. It must be hard to pick it and eat it.
ReplyDeleteDaphne, that plant has had many leaves harvested from it. I pick a circle or two of older leaves and in a day or two you don't notice at all.
ReplyDeleteThat's one very pretty Gentilina lettuce! I'll have to wait for more lettuce in the fall as it's too hot to plant any at the moment. Beets looking very good too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jenny! This is the first year that I've successfully grown beets.
DeleteNow I wish I hadn't harvested whole heads of Gentilina! I have a spare spot opening in the lettuce bed soon, I'll be sure that variety is one that gets planted.
ReplyDeleteThose beets look so good. I've never eaten white beets before, I'll have to give them a try next year. I do think the bi-colored ones I grew this spring were a bit sweeter than the red.
Do you think the peas will grow true next year? I assumed the Garden Sweet were hybrids. I'll be sure to save some of mine next year!
I only harvest the whole head of lettuce when they are starting to bolt.
DeleteThese beets were pr-sprouted and then sown as soon as the roots were evident. It's the first time I've had germination outdoors.
There are no f1 hybrid peas, or beans for that matter. I fully expect these seeds to grow true. The chance of peas crossing is much less than beans.
I'm jealous of your lettuce, ours bolted 3 weeks ago so we are "saladless" a the moment. Great week!!
ReplyDeleteStoney Acres, with the heat we've been having this week I'm sure that they will be bolting soon. I have to admit that I am getting a bit tired of lettuce.
DeleteOh your lettuce looks wonderful. I'll have to remember that name when I order seed! I have a tiny experimental patch, but it's going to be gone quick, we are over 100 most days right now.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mary! I have been very impressed with this variety. The seed came from Baker Creek Seed.
DeleteThat is a pretty lettuce variety and one I have not really heard of before. I am noting it as one to watch for when I am next in the seed purchasing mode.
ReplyDeleteKitsapFg, it's an Italian variety. The seed came from Baker Creek Seed. I've also seen it on a few sites that import Italian seed.
DeleteSounds like you had a great pea harvest between all those varieties. There's nothing quite like fresh peas from the garden is there. I was interested in what you said about the white beets being sweeter, I should give them a try.
ReplyDeleteI would definately recommend the white beets.
DeleteI had a good pea seed harvest. I let most of the pods go to replenich my supply of seed. Next year should be an awesome harvest!
