Yesterday I was able get most of my tomatoes planted.
Two 'Silvery Fir Tree' went into pots in the pool area. The rest went into the empty greens bed in the Potager. Cherry tomatoes were planted next to the fence. These will be trained to one stem and tied to the fence.
I planted the following:
2 'Sunspot Mixed'
1 'Ivory Pear'
1 'Amy's Apricot'
1 'Purple Pear'
1 'Reisenstraube'
2 'Black Cherry'
Two 'Victor' tomatoes went into the front of the bed.
I was also able to get three poles of Pole Beans sown.
2 'Cornetto Largo Verde'
1 'Fortrex' x 'Kentucky Blue' (Seed from Granny)
I'm hoping that sometime this week I can get the dwarf tomatoes planted in the flower beds and a few more bean poles planted. That is if we get a break from the thunder storms. Every evening a violent one has rolled in late afternoon and they are predicted for the rest of the week!

ReplyDeleteI hope your pole beans do better than mine. I'm going to have to replant every single bed, thanks to total insect destruction. They were all $$$ new seeds from Johnny's, too. I've used up most of the packet, so might end up planting last year's Fortex+Kentucky Blue again.
I have not finished planting yet there will be at least ten more.

I'm curious about the regular Fortrex seed, are they the same color as those you saved?
Yes, the Fortex seeds are a very dark brown, and the Kentucky Blue were white. That's why it was so surprising that the saved seeds, all dark brown and all from those very long Fortex pods (there's no possibility of mistaking them for another variety) turned out to have the mixed beans. You'll find some of the vines have white flowers and some have lavender flowers. The beans grow true on their own vines....I think it was the white flowers that gave me true Fortex beans and the lavender gave me a bean that was either Kentucky Wonder or Blue Lake. I don't think they grew true to Kentucky Blue. Confusing, huh?

DeleteMy Potomoc x Trionfo Violetto cross had white seeds when planted, when I went to save them last year they were all black! I'm curious to see how much purple the pods have this year.
Sounds good and I wish we would have a thunder storm with a nice amount of rain come through.

Lisa, I wish I could send them your way! We just had one that dumped over an inch of rain in a half hour. Then there was the flash flood, then the downstairs flooded! There's no mulch left in some of the beds, it's all over the grass!

Looks like you're a fan of cherry tomatoes. I can't wait to hear your review of the Purple Pear - purple varieties being my favorite, though I usually go for giants :)
ReplyDeleteJenny, I'll keep you posted. I was surprised that it is potato leaved, the catalog did not mention that. I prfer cherry tomatoes, I only grow regular sized oned because my cousins like them.
DeleteI have one variety of cherry tomatoes in the community garden that you might like - Indigo Rose. Another is Chocolate Cherry so I'll see how they taste.
DeleteJenny, I debated on ordering Indigo Rose, but decided to wait. I'll be waiting for reports on how yours do! I wonder how similiar Chocolate Cherry is to Black Cherry?
DeleteI don't know about Black Cherry because I've never tried it :) I guess I'll find out when the others start fruiting as it's my first try with these varieties.
