Harvest Monday- May 21, 2012

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  It is a great way to see what other across the country are harvesting.

This week it was all about lettuce.

'Fordhook Favorites Mixed' lettuce, well over a pound in this pile.

'Wild Garden Mixed' lettuce, I did start to steal two or three of the outer leaves from some of the plants.

'Bronze Beauty' lettuce.

OK, it's not lettuce, but I also picked a few of the outer leaves of the escarole.

Not much was done in the garden this weekend, besides basic maintenance.  Now that the pool has been opened, it takes a lot of time during the first few weeks.

  1. Beautiful lettuce harvests. I finally finished up the last of the lettuce picked a while ago. This week I'll have to go out and pick more.

    1. I noticed you had no lettuce in your post. We are supposed to have rain all week. If I can keep ahead of the slugs, I'll be swimming in lettuce next week, LOL!

  3. That lettuce looks strangely familiar ;-)

I've been just picking the outer leaves, but the mature plants were looking a bit tattered from it so I pulled half of the plants in the main lettuce bed yesterday and replaced them with young seedlings. In a week or so I'll do the same with the other half of that bed. I really need my "nursery" emptied so I can begin seeding the summer mix you sent.

Wonder of wonders, Mr. Granny (the man who only likes iceberg lettuce) told me "I'm really beginning to love those salads". Whoopie! It only took 49 1/2 years to convert him!

    1. I thought you'd notice that about the lettuce. I'm going to sow my summer lettuce this weekend. I just need to get some more of the unmentionable potting mix.

It only took two years fro me to break my cousins of their preference for iceberg lettuce. I'd have theown in the towel long before one decade goes by.

    2. I just returned from Lowes, where they had a special on unmentionable garden soil (2 cubic ft., reg. $7.77) and moisture control potting mix (32 qt, reg $10.99) at two bags for $12. I bought one of each, and will fill my "lettuce nursery" with the mixture. I wish they would make it simple and stick to either quarts or cubic feet. I wonder how many quarts are in a cubic foot. It's difficult to make price comparisons! I really wish it had been the regular potting mix that was on sale....oh, well.

  4. wow what a wonderful variety of lettuce! It all looks wonderfully delicious! And those peas are crazy! never saw anything like that before. I used to order lots from Burpee, years ago until they sold out to big ag and I started ordering from other places

    1. Mary, those pea seeds were ordered in 2006, the last time I was able to afford to buy from them. Their prices got be outrageous amd there quality was steadily going down hill. I don't miss them.

  5. Ed, I think your blood must be green in your veins with all the lettuce you grow. Good looking harvest.

    1. Hmnn... hadn't thought of that. Maybe I should switch to all red lettuce...

With all the rain predicted this week I should really get a great harvest for the holiday weekend.
