Harvest Monday- April 30, 2012

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  It's a great way to see what others are harvesting from their gardens.

The spinach is still going strong, but I did notice the red stemmed spinach is starting to bolt.  I should still get good harvest for two more weeks.  Then the spinach comes and tomatoes and pole beans will go into it's place.  I did not even pick any lettuce this week.  Their was so much of the other greens I didn't even miss it.  I don't have a scale to weigh the vegetables, but the spinach was easily over a pound and the arugula pretty about a half pound.  A half pound is a LOT of arugula.

'Zlata' radish, they were supposed to golden yellow, but actually they are light yellow, still very different.

'Siamese Dragon Stir Fry Mix' from Baker Creek Seed.

Red stemmed 'Scarlet' Spinach.

Green spinach, of the three varieties, 'Giant Nobel' is my favorite so far.

Arugula.
Temperatures are supposed to be in the high 60's to mid 70's this week.  I'm looking forward to a growth spurt from the lettuce, cabbage and escarole.

  1. Beautiful harvest. I just might get to pick some radishes this week. I've got my fingers crossed. It has been greens, greens, and greens for a while now.

  2. Thanks Daphne. I'm not that fond of radishes, but had the seed. These were relatively mild and a nice complement to the greens. Nest week I should have a lot more of them.

  3. Nice greens. The giant nobel leaves are huge. I sowed some of that variety over the weekend and hope they sprout soon. I am not fond of radishes either, but if sliced very thin they add a nice crunch and zing to a salad.

    1. GrafixMuse, yes the 'Giant Nobel' are huge, that's one of the reasons I have tries it. It has taken me 3 years to finally get a crop of it. The pre-sprouting and starting indoors certainly helped. I'll have to try your radish suggestion.

    1. Thanks Bee Girl! The 'Scarlet' spinach has proved to be a great variety, easy to grow, productive and quite ornamental!

  5. Beautiful harvest! Love all those greens. Does that radish taste any different from regular? I'm looking for radishes that are not peppery so I can get my hubby to eat them.

    1. Thanks Jenny! The radish was milder than others I've grown, but I don't know if it was the variety or maturing during cool weather. I'll be able tell soon as the temps are going back up into the 80's later this week.

    1. Thanks Mary! 'Giant Nobel' spinach may be a bit hard to find. My seeds came from the Sandhill Preservation Center.

  8. Oh great, another variety for me to try! Now 'Giant Nobel' is on my seed list for 2013.

No lettuce eaten this week? Oh, I am so enjoying the different varieties *someone special* sent me! I'm already looking forward to planting the summer mix varieties, but for now I just put a mix of all different kinds into a salt shaker and shook the seeds into a large plastic container as a "lettuce nursery". Those will be my next transplants before summer heat hits the garden, so I'll have no idea what varieties they are, but should have a good assortment.

    1. Granny, truth be told, I like lettuce the least of the greens. I love growing it and trying new varieties tough. I would be happy with just arugula.

I'm glad that you are enjoying all those lettuce varieties. I've been so fascinated by the 'Wild Garden Mix'. The variety in this mix is amazing.

  9. You sure are rolling in greens! I have never had luck with growing spinach, so I may check out some of the varieties you mentioned.

    1. Prairie Cat, I firmly believe that is the pre-sprouting and starting the seeds indoors. The 'Scarlet' spinach is the most vigorous of the group, but also the earliest to bolt.

  10. What a nice assortment of greens! I especially like the scarlet stemmed spinach- I love any veggie that is colorful or different- like those yellow radishes! Enjoy your harvest.
