Harvest Monday- June 25, 2012

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  Stop by and show off your harvest.

The first of the beets were ready this week.  The white beets were started under lights and transplanted into the garden.  The red were pre-sprouted and direct sown.
I roasted the beets and was amazed at how sweet the white are!  I'll be planting more white beets this fall.  The white ones do oxidize after being cut and the cut surface does turn a bit gray.

The rest of the harvest was lettuce.  The heat wave caused the bulk of the spring lettuce to bolt.  The exception is 'Gentilina'.  The loose heads just get bulkier and the texture is still incredibly crisp.

My two favorite varieties this year.  'Gentilina' backed by 'Ruby'.

This was the first year I've grown a butter head well!

  1. Oooohhhh...white beets!? I've never heard of such a thing! But if they're really as sweet as you say they are, I might have to try them out :-) What variety are they?

    1. The variety is 'Albino Improved', seed from Baker Creek. They are very sweet and the leaves even get much less bug damage than red beets.

  2. I too have not tried white beets but may do so next year.

    1. Thanks I was very impressed with the variety of lettuce this year. So far, not one has been bitter, even when they are bolting.

  5. Beets always look so pretty. I actually hate the taste, but I love to harvest them. So I planted a few last year and a few this year. Sometimes I think I'm crazy for growing things I won't even eat.

    1. Have you tried the white beets? I was surprised that they had such a good taste. I am going to try the golden this fall too.

I also grow things that I don't eat. This was the first year that I've grwon beets that I've eaten them.

  6. I'm anxiously waiting for my next round of beets to mature, which will be quite a while as they just popped up last week. My lettuce is holding up quite well, but we haven't had many hot days yet. The earwigs haven't found the heads growing in the cage yet, but really made a mess out of what I had in the main garden.

    1. I'm going to pre-sprout some beets this week to plant this weekend. I still have a row of red beets that will be coming out soon.

The 'Gentilina' lettuce should last me a few more weeks. And the summer lettuce should be ready to go outside soon.

  8. Great harvest. We love the butter head lettuce, great flavor and they last a long time in the fridge which is good this time of year cause we've had to pick them all to keep them from bolting.

  9. Yum roasted beet(roots), definitely a winner. I was interested in what you said about the white ones, I'll have to give them a go. And you can't go past a good lettuce leaf, at least when the weather is a little warmer than it is here.
