Harvest Monday- June 11, 2012

This week adds shelling peas to the harvest.
I had very poor pea germination so this year the yield is way down.  The first picking was enough for one meal.  The oldest pods were left in order to save seed for next year.

'Pretty' purple podded peas and green 'Garden Sweet' peas.
Then there was the lettuce.  I harvested and pulled all of the lettuce in the potager.  The lettuce in the pool beds is going to be coming out soon.  With three days in the 90's it is going to be bolting soon.  I'll leave two plants of 'Ruby' and the speckled crisp head to go to seed.  All the rest will be coming out very soon.

The last of the 'Fordhook Favorites Mixed' lettuce.

A good sampling of the lettuce that is still remaining the flower beds.

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  Stop by and see what everyone is harvesting.

  1. The lettuce looks beautiful. All of mine are bolting from the heat wave we had a week and a half ago.

    1. Mine is starting to bolt now. I'm surpised that lettuce by the pool, where it is the hottest, shows no sign of bolting. I'll actually have to pick the whole heads, normallly i harvest leaf by leaf.

    1. Jenny they were still much sweeter than regular peas. They are sweetest at the stage where they have almost filled the pod. They eveb have some sweetness they are big and starchy.

  3. I hope those Garden sweet peas tasted really good, I got my seed from Burpee last week. I'm going to plant more lettuce today. Two crispers full in the refrigerator just isn't enough, ya know :-O

    1. See my reply to Jenny. My next crop of lettuce is just getting it's first leaves inside under the lights.

What has shocked me is the escarole. I have heads two feet across, not one sign of bolting and every leaf is perfect. Those heads are actually to big to start blanching them.

    1. Mary, they are shelling peas. I got the seed from Burpee back in 2006. I grew them off and on since their intorducation in the 90's. I guess they never caught on as I cannot find them available from anyone. I've been saving my own seed for years.

  5. That lettuce is just gorgeous! Those purple peas are also beautiful. Are the peas purple or just the pod?

    1. Thanks Coral, the peas are green. It is just the pod that is purple. It makes them very easy to find among the vines.
