Harvest Monday- May 28, 2012

Harvest Monday is hosted by Daphne's Dandelions.  It is a great way to share what you have harvested and see what others have.

The first of the 'Blizzard' snow peas were ready this week.  Not much, just about half pound.  There are plenty more on the vines though.

The rest of the harvest was lettuce and escarole.  I'm only showing one picture this week.  I've been harvesting leaves almost every day and all of the harvest looked like this one.  That is a large sized paper plate the leaves are mounded on.

There is no Swiss chard this week.  All of the plants are getting attacked by earwigs.  Thanks to all of the rain the earwig population has exploded.  I'm going to try drenching them with a garlic based brew this week to see if this will repel them.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

  1. Your snow peas look yummy!

Unfortunately, the lettuce seed I started for the first turned out to be a bust for me, and my directly sown stuff is not ready yet. I am drooling over your giant plate of lettuce!

Let us know how your garlic brew works! I am always on the look-out for new, natural bug killers.

    1. Thanks Prairie Cat! I'll keep you posted on my trial with the garlic brew. I don't think yesterdays application worked that well as we had a severe thuder storm not long after the application.

My lettuce seems to be doing best planted in the flower beds. The only problem is that is ALMOST too pretty to pick!

  2. I've never had chard attacked by earwigs. I've had them get into the heads of Chinese cabbage and destroy them. I've had them eat all the silks off of my corn in bad years. But never eat the chard. Earwigs are such weird things. They are good insects since they eat the aphids. But they are also omnivores so they can be so destructive.

    1. I normally only have them attack the opening flowers on my daylilies. I'm hoping this is temporary, I can wait a bit to harvest the chard. I didn't know that they eat aphids... I still want them gone.

  5. Nice peas! Sorry about the earwigs getting your chard. I'm surprised I haven't had things eating my chard because I often feel that every pest imaginable lives in my garden!

    1. Most people seem surprised. It could be worse though. I'll take bug problems over animal problems verytime!

  6. great looking peas and lettuce. Sadly mine are all done. mmmm I rarely see earwigs, usually just in the compost pile or sometimes the worm box; they do seem to like it damp.

    1. Thanks Mary! I always have a problem with earwigs, usually they just bother my daylilies. Daphne mentioned that they eat aphids. I have seen a lot less aphids this year, hmnn...

  7. That lettuce looks wonderful. My grandma used to make a milk/vinegar/sugar mixture for leaf lettuce. Oh, how I wish I knew how she did it!

    1. Thanks Pearl. That dressing sounds very interesting. I'll have to see if I can find anything out about it.

  8. That is unfortunate that your garden is getting attacked by earwigs. Hope you can get it under control.
