I was finally able to get a few things done in the garden today. The cool, overcast weather broke for a few hours of blue skies and nice temps, perfect to get a few things planted.

The spinach is starting to fill out, hopefully I'll be able to start harvesting some soon.

The first of the Swiss chard seedlings were planted.

A batch of mixed lettuce seedlings and some pathetic looking beet seedlings rounded out the transplants. I did manage to squeeze in a few short rows of the Thai green seed mix.
The chitted beet seeds planted last weekend have sprouted and their germination was excellent. I have had problems in previous year with germination and hope to get a good harvest this year.
The forecast tonight is for a light rain, perfect for the new transplants.
We got rain last night too, but only about a 1/4". I was hoping for more. We really need a good soaking rain sometime soon. We have had a lot of dry weather the last couple of months and we are low on rainfall.
ReplyDeleteOne thing we are not short of is rain. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't get the torrents like last year! Maybe I can figure out how to send the rain up to you.
DeleteA cold snap has hit us again, the wind chill makes it impossible for me to get much done outside. Your garden is at least a couple of weeks ahead of mine, but my peas finally broke through over the weekend. Snap and shelling peas, that is. The sweet peas are still a no show.
ReplyDeleteWe have another freeze warning tonight. I'm not worried about the vegetables, it's the perennials that seem to get hit the hardest, and there are too many to try covering them.
DeleteMy pea germination has been somewhat spotty, this I blame on the seed. The bulk of the sweet peas were pre-sprouted and are under the lights. Hopefully I can plant them outside soon.
Your garden is looking very good Ed. You have a lot of cold crops already growing.Your peas will be climbing soon. Have a terrific week.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lona! I have to keep reminding myself that at this time last year I was still waiting for the peas to sprout. I'm hoping that I can begin to start harvesting the spinach very soon.
